Mark: Welcome to today's market update, folks. We're diving into the latest from the markets as of August 11, 2025. I'm Mark, and joining me is Susan. Let's kick things off with the major indices.
Susan: Thanks, Mark. So, yesterday, the S&P 500 closed at 6,373.45, down 16.00 points. The Dow Jones also saw a decline, closing at 43,975.09, a drop of 200.52 points. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq ended the day at 21,385.40, down 64.62 points. Clearly, it was a tough day across the board.
Mark: Absolutely, Susan. It seems like investors might be treading cautiously. Let's switch gears and talk about some individual stocks. Tesla had quite a day, opening at $335.00 and closing at $339.03, gaining $4.03. That's a nice little bump for TSLA.
Susan: Indeed, Mark. Tesla's performance stands out, especially in a broadly declining market. On the other hand, we saw Amazon drop slightly, closing at $221.30, down $0.48 from its opening. Similarly, Microsoft and Meta both ended the day in the red, with Microsoft down $0.53 and Meta down $4.21.
Mark: Right, but not all news was grim. Netflix had a good day, gaining $4.30 to close at $1,218.31. It's always interesting to see how different stocks react to the same market conditions.
Susan: Very true. Now, let's focus on one stock in particular—Google, or GOOG. Yesterday, it opened at $201.55 and closed slightly up at $201.63, gaining $0.08. It's a modest gain, but in a market like this, every little bit helps.
Mark: Definitely, Susan. Google's consistent performance in such a volatile market is noteworthy. It's a reminder of the company's strong fundamentals and its resilience amidst broader market fluctuations.
Susan: Well said, Mark. Before we wrap up, I think it's time for our market-related anecdote. Did you know that the first stock ticker was invented in 1867? Before that, stock prices were delivered by messengers known as "pad shovers." Can you imagine the chaos on Wall Street before technology stepped in?
Mark: That's a great tidbit, Susan! It's amazing how far we've come. Thanks for tuning in, everyone. Remember to stay informed and make wise investment decisions.
Susan: Thanks for joining us, and have a great day!
